Laser Treatments · quick answer

How laser treatments work, in one paragraph

Medical lasers deliver light of a specific wavelength that is absorbed by a chosen target in the skin, such as pigment, blood vessels, water or hair, and heat or break it up while limiting harm to the surrounding tissue. Different devices suit different problems, from pigmentation and tattoos to acne scars, unwanted hair and skin laxity. At Ever Skin Clinic in Apgujeong, a board-certified dermatologist examines your skin and skin type first, then chooses the device, settings and number of sessions with you.

Our laser and energy devices

What laser treatments can address

No single laser treats everything. Pigment-targeting lasers such as the Q-switch laser and pico laser break up melanin or tattoo ink; resurfacing lasers such as the fractional CO2 laser remove microscopic columns of skin to remodel scars and texture; and hair removal lasers target pigment in the hair follicle.

This section also groups related energy-based treatments that are not strictly lasers: high-intensity focused ultrasound ( HIFU), microwave-based ONDA, radiofrequency microneedling (Potenza) and light-activated therapies such as PDT and Gold PTT. Your dermatologist will explain which technology fits your concern.

Main treatment groups

  • Pigment and colour — freckles, sun spots, birthmarks, uneven tone and tattoos
  • Scars and texture — acne scars, enlarged pores and rough skin
  • Active acne — PDT, Gold PTT and laser-based acne programs
  • Hair removal — face and body, with settings adjusted for skin type
  • Lifting and tightening — Titanium, HIFU and ONDA for laxity and contour

Is it right for you?

How we choose the right laser for you

The choice depends on the depth and type of the problem, your skin type and how much downtime you can accept. Deeper skin tones, for example, need wavelengths and settings that lower the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation, which we cover in skin discoloration treatment for darker skin.

For travellers, we plan around flight dates: gentle lasers can be done shortly before departure, while resurfacing is better scheduled with several days in Seoul to recover.

Your dermatologist considers

  • The type of lesion or concern, confirmed by examination
  • Your skin type and history of pigmentation or keloids
  • Recent sun exposure, tanning and current skincare
  • Medications such as isotretinoin or photosensitising drugs
  • Your available recovery time and travel plans

Your visit

How a laser visit works

Most laser appointments take about 30 to 90 minutes in clinic, including consultation, preparation and soothing care.

  1. Consultation A board-certified dermatologist examines the skin, confirms the diagnosis and agrees the device and plan with you.
  2. Preparation The skin is cleansed, eyes are protected and numbing cream or cooling is applied when needed.
  3. Treatment The laser or device is applied with settings adjusted to your skin and target, usually in 10 to 40 minutes.
  4. Aftercare We soothe the skin, give sun protection and aftercare advice, and book follow-up sessions if a course is planned.

An example of energy-based treatment in a wider plan

This patient received hyaluronidase to dissolve previous filler, followed by Shurink HIFU lifting. HIFU is one of the energy-based devices in this section, but the change shown comes from the combined plan, not from a laser alone.

Laser results vary widely by device and concern, so ask us for cases specific to your treatment, such as pigment, tattoo or scar results, at consultation.

Recovery & safety

Safety, skin type and recovery

Common short-term effects include redness, warmth, mild swelling and, after pigment or resurfacing lasers, small crusts that shed over about a week. Less common risks include blistering, temporary darkening or lightening of the skin and, rarely, scarring, which is why settings are chosen for your skin type.

Tell your dermatologist if you are pregnant, have recently tanned, take isotretinoin or photosensitising medication, have a history of keloids or cold sores, or have an active skin infection in the area.

Aftercare tips

  • Use broad-spectrum SPF 50 daily and avoid direct sun
  • Keep the skin moisturised with gentle products
  • Avoid retinoids and exfoliating acids until the skin settles
  • Do not pick crusts or scabs
  • Skip saunas and intense exercise for 1 to 2 days

Questions we hear every day

Laser Treatments FAQ

Do laser treatments hurt?

Most lasers cause a snapping or warm sensation. Numbing cream, cooling devices or both are used for more intense treatments such as resurfacing or tattoo removal. Discomfort varies with the device, the area and your sensitivity, and your dermatologist can adjust the approach if needed.

How many laser sessions will I need?

It depends on the treatment. Pigment and acne programs often need around 3 to 5 sessions, laser hair removal commonly 5 to 8, and tattoo removal can need many more. Your dermatologist will give a realistic estimate after examining your skin.

Can I have a laser treatment during a short trip to Seoul?

Often yes. Gentle pigment, toning and hair removal sessions have little downtime. Resurfacing such as fractional CO2 is better planned with about a week in Seoul. Strict sun protection matters after any laser, especially if you are flying to a sunny destination.

Are lasers safe for darker skin?

Many lasers can be used on darker skin with appropriate wavelengths and conservative settings, but the risk of temporary pigment change is higher. Your dermatologist may suggest a test spot, a gentler device or pre-treatment skincare to reduce that risk.

Which laser is right for my concern?

The right device depends on what is causing the problem and how deep it sits. A diagnosis comes first: for example, melasma, sun spots and birthmarks can look similar but need different approaches. Your dermatologist will explain the options and trade-offs at consultation.
