What is lip filler?
Lips are highly mobile and have a rich blood supply, so they need soft, flexible filler and precise placement. Depending on your goal, filler may be placed along the vermilion border for definition, in the body of the lip for volume, at the corners for a gentle lift, or as fine threads to soften vertical lip lines. Good design keeps lip proportions in balance, for example a slightly fuller lower lip.

Recovery, side effects and aftercare
Lips swell more than most areas, typically peaking on the first day and settling over one to three days, so they may look larger at first. Bruising and tenderness are common. Lumps can usually be massaged or adjusted, and HA can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Cold sore flare-ups, infection and vascular occlusion are uncommon but need prompt care.
Tell your dermatologist about cold sores, previous lip filler or permanent lip implants, recent dental work, allergies, blood thinners, or pregnancy or breastfeeding. Contact the clinic urgently for increasing pain, white or dusky patches on the lip, or blisters.
Aftercare tips
- Avoid kissing, straws and pressing the lips for the first day
- Use a cool compress gently to reduce swelling
- Skip alcohol, saunas and intense exercise for 2 to 3 days
- Avoid lipstick until entry points have closed, usually the next day
- Postpone dental treatment for about two weeks if possible

Does lip filler hurt?
Lips are sensitive, but numbing cream is applied first and the filler contains lidocaine, so most patients feel pressure and brief stinging. The injection takes only a few minutes. Tell your dermatologist if you are anxious so the pace can be adjusted.
How long does lip filler last?
Lip filler often lasts around six to twelve months, sometimes longer with repeat treatments. Because lips move constantly, they tend to break down filler faster than areas like the chin. Metabolism and lifestyle also play a role.
Will my lips look overdone?
Not if the amount and design suit your face. We usually start conservatively and can add more at a review. Remember that lips look biggest in the first one to two days because of swelling.
Can lip filler migrate?
Migration above the lip border can happen with too much filler, superficial placement or repeated large volumes. Careful technique and moderate amounts reduce this risk, and migrated HA can be dissolved.
Can I have lip filler before a flight or event?
Yes, but allow at least two to three days for swelling and any bruising to settle before important events or photos. Flying is generally fine; if you get cold sores, ask about preventive medication.
