Botox for Sweating · quick answer

What Botox for sweating does, in one paragraph

Botox for sweating is a treatment for hyperhidrosis in which botulinum toxin is injected just under the skin of an over-sweating area. It blocks the nerve signal that activates the sweat glands, so sweating in that area falls within days and stays reduced for several months. It is usually considered when strong antiperspirants have not worked, and can be used for the underarms, palms, soles and face. At Ever Skin Clinic, a board-certified dermatologist confirms the diagnosis and discusses where Botox fits among the available options.

How it works

How Botox fits among sweating treatments

Treatment for focal hyperhidrosis is usually stepped. Clinical-strength aluminium chloride antiperspirants come first. For hands and feet, iontophoresis, which passes a mild current through water, is a needle-free option. Botox is a well-established next step: it works on the nerve-to-gland signal, does not depend on daily use, and lasts months per session. Oral medicines or surgery are generally reserved for more difficult cases and are discussed individually.

For a detailed look at specific areas, see our underarm Botox and hyperhidrosis Botox pages, which cover palms, soles, face and scalp.

Comparing common options

  • Antiperspirants : easy first step, but can irritate and need daily use
  • Iontophoresis : needle-free for hands and feet, needs regular sessions
  • Botox : one visit, results for months, best studied for underarms
  • Oral medicines : affect the whole body and can cause dry mouth
  • Surgery : more permanent but invasive, considered only in selected cases

Is it right for you?

Who is a good candidate?

Botox suits people with primary focal hyperhidrosis: heavy, usually symmetrical sweating in specific areas, often since adolescence, that affects work, social life or clothing. If sweating is all over the body, began suddenly in adulthood, or comes with night sweats, fever or weight loss, your dermatologist will first look for an underlying cause, such as thyroid problems or medication side effects.

Botox for sweating may suit you if you

  • Have tried strong antiperspirants without enough relief
  • Sweat heavily in the underarms, hands, feet or face
  • Want months of relief from a single visit
  • Find iontophoresis impractical for your routine
  • Need relief before summer, a wedding or a new job

Your visit

What happens during treatment

Most patients are treated in a single visit, with a review offered if any patches remain.

  1. Diagnosis Your dermatologist reviews your history, medications and pattern of sweating.
  2. Mapping A starch-iodine test may be used to show the most active areas of sweating.
  3. Injection Small amounts are placed just under the skin in a grid, with numbing for sensitive areas.
  4. Review We can check results at about 2 weeks and plan the timing of future sessions.

Measuring results for sweating

Sweat reduction is not visible in an ordinary photograph, so this image shows a different Botox treatment, masseter Botox for jaw slimming, as an example of our dermatologists' Botox work. It is not a hyperhidrosis result.

For sweating, we measure success by your daily comfort and, where useful, by a repeat starch-iodine test at your review.

Recovery & safety

Recovery, side effects and aftercare

Most people go back to normal activities immediately. Small bumps and pinpoint bruising settle within a day or two. Palm treatment can temporarily weaken fine grip; forehead treatment can reduce brow movement. Some patients notice mild extra sweating in untreated areas.

Tell your dermatologist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a neuromuscular condition such as myasthenia gravis, take blood thinners or aminoglycoside antibiotics, or have symptoms suggesting another cause of sweating.

Aftercare tips

  • Avoid saunas, hot baths and heavy exercise for 24 hours
  • Do not rub or massage the treated skin that day
  • Restart antiperspirant the day after treatment
  • Keep a note of when sweating returns to plan your next session
  • Contact the clinic if you notice unusual weakness

Questions we hear every day

Botox for Sweating FAQ

Is Botox approved for treating sweating?

Botulinum toxin has been approved for severe underarm sweating in many countries for years, and it is widely used by dermatologists for palms, soles and face as well. Your dermatologist will explain which uses are standard for your area and which brand is being used.

How long does Botox for sweating last?

Underarm results often last about four to nine months. Palms and soles tend to last a little shorter, around three to six months. Duration varies between people and with dose, and many patients schedule treatment ahead of the warmer months.

Should I try iontophoresis or Botox first?

For the hands and feet, iontophoresis is a reasonable needle-free option if you can commit to regular sessions. Botox gives longer relief from one visit. For the underarms, Botox is usually more practical. Your dermatologist will help you decide based on your routine.

Does Botox for sweating hurt?

Underarm injections are usually well tolerated. Palms and soles are more sensitive, so we use numbing cream, ice and vibration to reduce discomfort. Each area takes only a few minutes, and most patients feel the relief is worth the short session.

Can I have Botox for sweating while travelling?

Yes. There is no downtime, results begin within a few days, and you can fly the next day. It can be a good option before a trip to a hot climate. Avoid saunas and heavy exercise for the first 24 hours after treatment.
