Pigmentation & Skin Brightening · quick answer

How we treat pigmentation, in one paragraph

Pigmentation means areas of skin that are darker than the surrounding skin because of excess melanin, such as melasma, sun spots, freckles and marks left after acne or inflammation. Each type sits at a different depth and reacts differently to heat, so the right treatment depends on an accurate diagnosis. At Ever Skin Clinic, a board-certified dermatologist identifies your pigment type, often with skin imaging, then combines lasers such as laser toning, Pico or IPL with prescription topicals and strict sun protection.

Overview

Types of pigmentation we treat

Not all brown marks are the same. Sun spots and freckles sit near the surface and often clear well with IPL or Pico laser. Melasma is a reactive, hormone- and light-driven condition that can worsen with heat, so it needs gentle laser toning and topical care. Marks after acne usually fade with time, sun protection and gentle treatment.

Brightening drips such as glutathione and vitamin C are offered only as optional support. For overall glow and dullness rather than distinct spots, see our skin whitening and brightening page.

Conditions and treatments in this group

  • Freckles : IPL or Pico laser, with sun protection to prevent return
  • Post-acne and post-inflammatory marks : gentle toning and topicals
  • Dull, uneven tone : toning, peels and optional antioxidant drips

Who we help

Who we help

We treat patients of all skin tones, from very fair to deeply pigmented skin. Darker skin has a higher risk of rebound pigmentation, so we start with gentle settings and test areas. Many of our patients are visitors who want to start treatment in Seoul and continue a home routine afterwards.

Any new, changing or irregular dark spot should be checked by a dermatologist before cosmetic treatment, to rule out skin cancer.

You may benefit if you have

  • Brown patches on the cheeks or forehead that worsen in summer
  • Sun spots on the face, hands or chest
  • Freckles you would like to lighten
  • Dark marks left after acne or insect bites
  • Uneven tone that makes make-up harder to match

  3. Treatment The first session is carried out with settings adapted to your skin.
  4. Home care You leave with sunscreen and skincare instructions and a schedule for follow-up sessions.

Safety

Safety and aftercare

Laser toning usually leaves only brief redness. IPL and Pico for spots cause treated spots to darken and flake over about a week. Risks include temporary darkening (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), lightening, and, rarely, blistering or scarring, which is why settings depend on your skin type and pigment.

Tell your dermatologist if you have a tan, melasma, a history of cold sores, take isotretinoin or photosensitising medicines, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Aftercare tips

  • Use broad-spectrum SPF 50 every day and reapply outdoors
  • Let darkened spots flake naturally without picking
  • Avoid saunas and heat exposure for a few days
  • Skip exfoliating acids and retinoids for about a week after laser
  • Keep maintenance visits, as pigment can return

Questions we hear every day

Pigmentation & Skin Brightening FAQ

What is the best treatment for pigmentation?

It depends on the type. Sun spots and freckles often respond well to IPL or Pico laser in one or two sessions, while melasma needs gentle laser toning, topicals and sun protection over months. A dermatologist's diagnosis is the most important first step.

Will my pigmentation come back?

Sun spots and freckles can return with new sun exposure, and melasma tends to recur, especially in summer or with hormonal change. Daily sunscreen and occasional maintenance treatment help keep results.

Is laser safe for darker skin?

Yes, with appropriate devices and settings. Darker skin is more prone to rebound pigmentation, so we prefer low-energy toning, test spots and pre-treatment topicals, and we avoid aggressive heat-based treatments.

How much downtime should I expect?

Laser toning has little downtime. IPL and Pico for spots cause small dark crusts that flake off within about a week; make-up can usually be worn the next day. We will tell you what to expect before each treatment.

Can I start treatment during a visit to Seoul?

Yes. Spot treatments can often be completed in one or two visits, while melasma care starts in clinic and continues with a home routine. Tell us your travel dates so we can plan sessions and follow-up.
