Dermal Fillers · quick answer

What dermal fillers do for ageing skin, in one paragraph

Dermal fillers are injectable materials that replace volume lost with age, softening folds, hollows and flattened contours. The three main types work differently: hyaluronic acid (HA) gives immediate, reversible volume; calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse) adds firm support and stimulates collagen; and poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra) builds volume gradually through collagen production. At Ever Skin Clinic in Apgujeong, a board-certified dermatologist looks at how your face has changed with age and matches the filler type to each concern.

The treatment

How dermal fillers reverse volume loss

As we age, fat pads in the face shrink and shift, bone slowly resorbs and collagen declines. The result is hollow temples and under-eyes, flatter cheeks and deeper folds around the mouth. Restoring support in the right places, often the temples and midface first, can soften lower-face folds indirectly and look more natural than filling every line.

Fillers work best alongside treatments that address other parts of ageing: Botox for expression lines and lifting such as Ultherapy for laxity. For a full guide to filler areas, see our derma fillers page.

The main filler types

  • Hyaluronic acid — immediate, adjustable and dissolvable; see HA fillers
  • Calcium hydroxylapatite — firm support plus collagen stimulation; see Radiesse
  • Poly-L-lactic acid — gradual, diffuse volume over months; see Sculptra
  • PCL and PDLLA stimulators — such as Ellanse and Juvelook
  • Permanent fillers are not used at our clinic

Is it right for you?

Who is a good candidate?

Dermal fillers suit adults, often from their thirties onwards, who notice hollowness, a tired look or deepening folds and want improvement without surgery. Patients who have lost weight and look gaunt also benefit.

If sagging is marked, filler alone can make the face look heavy; your dermatologist may recommend lifting first and then modest filler. Collagen stimulators suit patients who prefer a slow, subtle change over several months.

Dermal fillers may help if you

  • Look tired because of hollow temples or under-eyes
  • Have flattened cheeks and deepening smile lines
  • Notice marionette lines or a sad look at the mouth corners
  • Look gaunt after weight loss
  • Want a natural, gradual refresh without surgery

Your visit

What happens during treatment

A filler appointment typically takes 30 to 60 minutes; collagen stimulators may be planned as two or three sessions.

  1. Consultation A board-certified dermatologist assesses age-related changes and recommends filler types, areas and amounts.
  2. Mapping and numbing Injection points are planned around blood vessels and numbing cream is applied.
  3. Injection Filler is placed with a needle or microcannula, starting with structural support and refining from there.
  4. Follow-up We explain aftercare, when results settle and when a review or next session may help.

Real patient · before & after

Softening an age-related fold

This patient received filler to soften the marionette lines running down from the corners of the mouth, which can create a tired or sad expression. The change is subtle but makes the lower face look more relaxed.

How much improvement is possible depends on skin quality and how much the fold comes from volume loss versus sagging, which your dermatologist will explain at consultation.

Recovery & safety

Recovery, side effects and aftercare

Swelling, tenderness and bruising are common and usually settle within a few days to a week. Lumps, asymmetry and, with collagen stimulators, small nodules can occur. Rare but serious risks include infection and blood vessel compromise. HA filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase; Radiesse and Sculptra cannot, so they are planned conservatively.

Tell your dermatologist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take blood thinners, have an autoimmune condition, active infection, keloid tendency or previous filler. Contact the clinic immediately with increasing pain, skin colour change or vision change.

Aftercare tips

  • Avoid pressing treated areas, unless you are asked to massage after Sculptra
  • Skip saunas, hot baths and intense exercise for 2 to 3 days
  • Limit alcohol for a couple of days
  • Sleep with your head slightly raised on the first night
  • Use daily sunscreen to protect collagen and skin quality

Questions we hear every day

Dermal Fillers FAQ

Which type of dermal filler is right for me?

It depends on your concern. HA filler is best when you want an immediate, adjustable change; Radiesse suits firm structural support; Sculptra suits gradual, overall volume restoration. Many patients receive more than one type in different areas.

How long do dermal fillers last?

HA fillers often last six to eighteen months, Radiesse around twelve to eighteen months, and Sculptra can last up to around two years after a full course. Duration varies with the area, amount and your metabolism.

Will fillers make me look puffy or unnatural?

Overfilling causes that look. Our dermatologists restore support in key areas with modest amounts and review the result, rather than filling every line in one session.

At what age should I start fillers?

There is no fixed age. Many people consider fillers when hollows or folds begin to bother them, often from their thirties. Earlier small corrections can be more natural than waiting for large volume loss.

Can I have fillers while visiting Seoul?

Yes. HA filler shows results immediately and downtime is short. Collagen stimulators need more than one session several weeks apart, so plan these around repeat visits or ask about combining with HA for a single trip.
