Botox · quick answer

What Botox does, in one paragraph

Botox is the common name for botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein that temporarily blocks the nerve signal telling a muscle to contract or a sweat gland to work. Injected in small, precise doses, it softens expression lines such as forehead lines, frown lines and crow's feet, slims enlarged muscles such as the jaw, and reduces excessive sweating. Effects appear within days and typically last three to six months. At Ever Skin Clinic, board-certified dermatologists assess your face and plan the dose themselves.

The treatment

How does Botox work?

Each muscle movement starts with a nerve releasing acetylcholine. Botulinum toxin temporarily stops that release at the treated nerve endings, so the muscle relaxes. Over about three to six months, the nerve forms new connections and movement returns, which is why Botox is repeated. In the skin, the same action quietens overactive sweat glands.

Botox does not fill or lift tissue. It is best for lines caused by movement and for muscle bulk, and is often combined with dermal fillers for lost volume or lifting such as Ultherapy for laxity. For every treatment area, see our Botox areas page.

Common uses of Botox

  • Upper face lines : forehead, frown (11) lines and crow's feet
  • Contouring : jaw (masseter), temple and zygoma Botox
  • Lower face : gummy smile, lip flip, chin dimpling and mouth corners
  • Skin quality : Dermotoxin (micro-Botox) for fine lines and pores
  • Medical uses : excessive sweating and teeth clenching

Is it right for you?

Who is a good candidate?

Botox suits adults who want to soften lines that appear with expression, slim a muscle-related wide jaw, or reduce sweating, without surgery. Some patients start in their late twenties or thirties to slow line formation; others use it to refresh a tired look later in life. Botox is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for people with certain neuromuscular conditions.

Botox may suit you if you

  • Have forehead, frown or eye lines that deepen with expression
  • Have a square jaw from a strong masseter or clench your teeth
  • Sweat heavily in the underarms, palms or scalp
  • Want a natural look with short downtime
  • Prefer a temporary, adjustable treatment before considering surgery

Real patient · before & after

A Botox result: slimming the jaw

This patient had masseter Botox only. As the jaw muscle relaxed and reduced in bulk over several weeks, the lower face became narrower and softer while expressions stayed natural.

Results for wrinkle Botox look different and depend on line depth and skin quality. Your dermatologist will tell you at consultation what is realistic for the areas you want to treat.

Photos are shared with the patient's consent and are not retouched apart from privacy blurring. Results differ from person to person and are not guaranteed.

Recovery & safety

Recovery, side effects and aftercare

Most people return to normal activities straight away. Small red bumps, mild swelling, tiny bruises or a short headache can occur. Less common effects include a heavy brow, eyelid drooping or an uneven smile if the toxin affects nearby muscles; these are temporary and are reduced by careful dosing and placement.

Tell your dermatologist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a neuromuscular condition such as myasthenia gravis, take blood thinners or aminoglycoside antibiotics, have an infection at the site, or had Botox in the last three months.

Aftercare tips

  • Stay upright for about 4 hours after facial Botox
  • Avoid rubbing, massaging or pressing treated areas that day
  • Skip saunas, hot baths and intense exercise on the treatment day
  • Avoid facials or face massage for about a week
  • Wait 2 weeks before judging the result or asking for a top-up

Questions we hear every day

Botox FAQ

Does Botox hurt?

Most patients feel brief pinches from a very fine needle, and many rate it as mild. Each area takes only a few minutes. Ice or numbing cream can be used if you are sensitive, especially for areas around the mouth or for larger areas such as the jaw.

How long does Botox last?

For expression lines, Botox typically lasts about three to four months. Jaw slimming and sweat reduction often last longer, around four to six months or more. Duration depends on the dose, the area treated, your muscle strength and your metabolism, so it varies between people.

Who performs Botox at Ever Skin Clinic?

Botox at Ever Skin Clinic is planned and injected by our board-certified dermatologists, who assess your anatomy, choose the dose and place the injections themselves. They also record the brand and units so you have a clear history for future treatment.

What is the difference between Botox brands?

Botulinum toxin brands, such as Botox, Xeomin and approved Korean toxins, share the same mechanism but differ in formulation and unit strength, so doses are not directly interchangeable. Your dermatologist will explain the options available at your visit and which suits your goals.

Can I get Botox while visiting Seoul?

Yes. Botox needs no recovery time, and effects start within about a week. If you are staying longer than two weeks, a review appointment allows fine-tuning. Avoid flights on the same day if possible, stay upright and skip saunas for the rest of the day.
