Allergy testing identifies substances your immune system reacts to, such as dust mites, pollen, animal dander, moulds or foods. The main methods are a blood test that measures allergen-specific IgE antibodies and a skin prick test. What is allergy testing?
An allergy is an immune response to something that is harmless for most people. In the skin it can show up as hives, itching, swelling or worsening eczema. Testing helps confirm or rule out likely triggers so you can avoid what matters and stop avoiding what does not.
A positive test shows sensitisation, not necessarily a true allergy, which is why a dermatologist interprets results with your history. Reactions to something touching the skin, such as metals, fragrances or hair dye, are a different type of allergy (contact dermatitis), and your dermatologist will discuss the right investigation for that.
Types of testing

Who should consider allergy testing?
Testing is most helpful when symptoms seem linked to particular exposures, such as seasons, pets, house dust or foods, or when eczema or hives keep returning without an obvious cause. It is less useful as a broad screen without symptoms.
Many patients who move to Korea notice new symptoms with different pollens, dust or yellow-dust seasons, and testing can clarify what is going on.

Side effects and safety
Blood testing may leave a small bruise. Skin prick testing causes itchy bumps at positive sites that usually settle within an hour or so; larger reactions are uncommon, and testing is done where staff can respond. Results can be falsely positive or negative, so they guide rather than replace clinical judgement.
Tell your dermatologist if you have had a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), have uncontrolled asthma, take antihistamines, beta-blockers or immune-suppressing medicines, have widespread eczema on the testing area, or are pregnant. If you have a severe reaction to a food or medicine, seek urgent care rather than waiting for testing.

Allergy Testing FAQ
Which allergy test is better, blood or skin?
Both are useful. Blood testing is convenient, is not affected by antihistamines and avoids reactions on the skin, but results take a few days. Skin prick tests give results within about 20 minutes. Your dermatologist chooses based on your symptoms and medicines.
Do I need to stop antihistamines before testing?
For skin prick testing, antihistamines are usually stopped for several days beforehand because they can hide reactions. Blood tests are not affected. Do not stop other prescribed medicines without asking your doctor.
Can testing tell me what causes my hives?
Sometimes. Many cases of chronic hives are not caused by a single allergen, and tests may be negative. Testing is most helpful when symptoms follow particular exposures. Your dermatologist will explain what results can and cannot show.
Do you test for reactions to skincare or metals?
Reactions to things touching the skin, such as fragrance, preservatives or nickel, involve a different type of allergy. Discuss your symptoms at consultation and your dermatologist will advise on the appropriate test and how it would be arranged.
How long do results take if I am visiting Seoul?
Skin prick results are read the same day. Blood test results usually take several days, so book early in your stay or arrange to receive results and advice by message after you leave.
