RF Microneedling · quick answer

What RF microneedling does, in one paragraph

RF microneedling combines fine needles with radiofrequency energy. The needles enter the skin to a set depth and release heat at their tips, creating controlled micro-injuries in the dermis that trigger collagen and elastin remodelling while sparing much of the surface. It is used for acne scars, enlarged pores, uneven texture, fine lines and mild laxity. At Ever Skin Clinic, a board-certified dermatologist sets needle depth and energy for your skin type and concern, using devices such as Potenza.

The treatment

What is RF microneedling?

Conventional microneedling relies on tiny punctures alone. RF microneedling adds heat delivered directly into the dermis, so it can remodel collagen more deeply with less surface injury than many resurfacing lasers. Insulated needles focus the energy at the tip, which helps protect the epidermis and lowers the risk of pigmentation in darker skin types.

We use it as part of our acne scar programmes and for skin tightening. Devices such as Potenza can also deliver skin boosters through the needles in the same session.

What RF microneedling can help

  • Acne scars: rolling and shallow boxcar scars
  • Pores: enlarged pores on the cheeks and nose
  • Texture: rough, uneven or sun-damaged skin
  • Laxity: mild loosening on the lower face and neck
  • Body: selected stretch marks and scars

Is it right for you?

Who is a good candidate?

RF microneedling suits adults who want to improve skin texture and firmness and can allow a few days of redness. It is often chosen for darker or reactive skin where aggressive lasers carry more pigment risk. Deep icepick scars may need TCA CROSS or subcision in addition.

RF microneedling may suit you if you

  • Have acne scars or enlarged pores
  • Want smoother, firmer skin without heavy resurfacing downtime
  • Have medium to darker skin and want a lower-pigment-risk option
  • Notice early laxity around the jawline or neck
  • Can commit to a short course of sessions

Your visit

What happens during treatment

A full-face session usually takes about an hour, including numbing time.

  2. Numbing Numbing cream is applied for about 30 to 40 minutes.
  3. Treatment The handpiece is pressed across the skin in passes, adjusting depth for each area; it takes about 15 to 30 minutes.
  4. Aftercare The skin is soothed, and we give you aftercare instructions and plan your next session.

Recovery & safety

Recovery, side effects and aftercare

Redness, mild swelling and a sunburn-like feeling are expected for one to three days, and small grid marks or pinpoint scabs can last a few days more. Less commonly, acne flares, prolonged redness, post-inflammatory pigmentation or infection can occur.

Tell your dermatologist if you have used isotretinoin recently, have a pacemaker or metal implants in the face, active acne or herpes infection, a history of keloids, or are pregnant. If you are prone to cold sores, ask about preventive medication.

Aftercare tips

  • Avoid make-up for about 24 hours
  • Use a gentle cleanser and barrier moisturiser
  • Apply sunscreen daily and avoid strong sun
  • Pause retinoids and exfoliating acids for about a week
  • Skip saunas, swimming and intense exercise for 2 to 3 days

Questions we hear every day

RF Microneedling FAQ

Does RF microneedling hurt?

Numbing cream is applied beforehand, so most patients feel prickling and warmth rather than sharp pain. Bony areas such as the forehead and jawline can feel stronger. Your dermatologist can adjust depth and energy if you are uncomfortable.

How many sessions will I need?

Many patients need about three to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, and deeper acne scars may need more. Your dermatologist will set a plan after examining your skin and review progress between sessions.

When will I see results?

Skin may look smoother within a couple of weeks, but collagen remodelling continues for about two to three months after each session, so the main improvement builds gradually across a course. Results vary between individuals.

Is RF microneedling safe for dark skin?

Insulated needles deliver heat below the surface, so RF microneedling is often considered for darker skin types where some lasers carry more pigmentation risk. Pigment changes are still possible, so your dermatologist uses conservative settings and asks you to protect your skin from sun.

Can I have RF microneedling on a short trip?

Yes, but plan for one to three days of redness and avoid strong sun and swimming afterwards. Since a course usually needs several sessions weeks apart, travellers may have one session per visit or combine it with home care.
