Armpit Botox · quick answer

What armpit Botox does, in one paragraph

Armpit Botox treats axillary hyperhidrosis, a condition in which the underarm sweat glands produce far more sweat than the body needs. Botulinum toxin injected just under the armpit skin blocks the nerve signal that switches these glands on, so sweating usually falls noticeably within days and stays reduced for several months. The rest of the body continues to sweat and cool normally. At Ever Skin Clinic, a board-certified dermatologist confirms the diagnosis and rules out other causes before treatment.

Understanding axillary hyperhidrosis

Primary axillary hyperhidrosis usually begins in adolescence or early adulthood, affects both sides, often runs in families and typically stops during sleep. It is a medical condition, not a hygiene problem, and can affect clothing choices, work, relationships and confidence. Secondary sweating, caused by conditions such as thyroid disease, infection or certain medicines, tends to be more generalised and needs a different approach.

Botox is one of the best-studied treatments for underarm sweating. This page explains the condition and who benefits; for the appointment step by step, see underarm Botox, and for other options, our hyperhidrosis treatments overview.

Signs that suggest axillary hyperhidrosis

  • Sweat patches through clothing without heat or exercise
  • Daily impact on clothing, work or social life
  • Started young , often in the teens or early twenties
  • Both sides affected, usually less at night
  • Family history of heavy sweating

Is it right for you?

Who is a good candidate?

Armpit Botox suits adults with primary axillary hyperhidrosis that persists despite clinical-strength antiperspirants, or who cannot tolerate them because of irritation. If your sweating began suddenly, is all over the body, happens at night or comes with weight loss, fever or palpitations, your dermatologist will look for an underlying cause before treating.

Armpit Botox may suit you if you

  • Have tried strong antiperspirants without enough relief
  • Change shirts during the day because of sweat
  • Avoid certain fabrics or colours
  • Want long-lasting relief without surgery
  • Have no signs of a secondary cause of sweating

Your visit

What happens during treatment

Treatment takes one visit of about 20 to 30 minutes, including assessment.

  1. Consultation Your dermatologist reviews your sweating pattern, medical history and medications.
  2. Mapping A starch-iodine test may be used to outline the most active sweating zone in each armpit.
  3. Injection Small amounts are injected just under the skin in an even grid across the mapped area.
  4. Review Results are checked at about 2 weeks, and any remaining active spots can be treated.

How we measure results for sweating

Sweat reduction cannot be shown well in a photo, so this image shows masseter Botox for jaw slimming as an example of our dermatologists' Botox work. It is not an armpit Botox result.

For underarm sweating, we assess results by your daily comfort and, where helpful, by repeating the starch-iodine test at your review visit.

Photos are shared with the patient's consent and are not retouched apart from privacy blurring. Results differ from person to person and are not guaranteed.

Recovery & safety

Recovery, side effects and aftercare

Most patients return to normal activities immediately. Mild tenderness, small bumps or pinpoint bruising may occur and usually fade within a day or two. Some notice slightly more sweating elsewhere, usually mild. Arm strength is not affected, because the medicine is placed in the skin rather than the muscle.

Tell your dermatologist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a neuromuscular condition such as myasthenia gravis, take blood thinners or aminoglycoside antibiotics, or have an armpit skin infection.

Aftercare tips

  • Skip antiperspirant and deodorant on the treatment day
  • Avoid saunas, hot baths and heavy exercise for 24 hours
  • Do not rub or massage the armpits that day
  • Wear loose clothing for the rest of the day
  • Note when sweating returns to time your next session

Questions we hear every day

Armpit Botox FAQ

How do I know if I have hyperhidrosis or just sweat a lot?

Hyperhidrosis means sweating beyond what the body needs, often soaking clothing at rest or in cool conditions and affecting daily life. If you regularly change shirts, avoid colours or feel limited socially, a dermatologist can assess you. Sudden or whole-body sweating needs medical review.

How long does armpit Botox last?

Results commonly last about four to nine months, and some people find later sessions last longer. Duration depends on the dose and how active your sweat glands are. Many patients book a session before the summer months to stay comfortable through the hottest weather.

Does armpit Botox reduce odour?

Often, yes. Odour comes from bacteria breaking down sweat, so less sweat usually means less smell. However, apocrine glands, which contribute to odour, respond less to Botox, so results vary between people. Good hygiene and antibacterial washes still help alongside treatment.

Is it harmful to stop underarm sweating?

No. The underarms are a small fraction of the body's sweating surface, so temperature control continues normally through the rest of the skin. Botox only reduces sweating where it is injected, and the effect wears off gradually over several months.

Can I have armpit Botox while visiting Seoul?

Yes. The treatment takes one short visit with no downtime, and you can fly the next day. Sweating usually starts to fall within a few days, so you will often notice the difference before you leave. Avoid saunas and hot spas for 24 hours.
