Ultrasound Therapy · quick answer

What ultrasound skin tightening does, in one paragraph

Ultrasound skin tightening uses focused ultrasound energy, delivered through the skin surface, to create tiny heated points in deeper tissue such as the dermis and the SMAS layer. The heat causes immediate contraction and then stimulates new collagen, so skin gradually becomes firmer and slightly lifted over two to three months. It suits mild to moderate laxity of the face, neck and some body areas. At Ever Skin Clinic, a board-certified dermatologist chooses the device, depths and energy for your skin.

How it works

What is ultrasound skin tightening?

Unlike the diagnostic ultrasound used for scans, therapeutic focused ultrasound concentrates energy at a precise depth below the skin. Cartridges or transducers reach different layers, commonly around 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 mm, so a dermatologist can treat the superficial dermis for firmness and the deeper SMAS layer for lift. The skin surface is not broken, and because the energy does not target pigment, it can be used across skin tones.

Several devices use this principle, including Ultherapy, which adds real-time imaging, and Shurink. Our HIFU lifting page compares the devices; this page explains the therapy and how it fits a tightening plan.

What ultrasound therapy can and cannot do

  • Can firm mild to moderate laxity of the cheeks, jawline, under-chin and neck
  • Can give a subtle brow and lower-face lift over several months
  • Can be combined with RF, threads or fillers in one plan
  • Cannot remove excess loose skin the way surgery does
  • Cannot replace lost volume; fillers or collagen stimulators address that

Is it right for you?

Who is a good candidate?

Ultrasound tightening suits adults with early to moderate sagging who want a gradual, natural-looking change without needles or downtime. It is often chosen for maintenance after a lift or as a first step before considering threads. Body areas such as the upper arms or abdomen can be treated in some cases, though results there are usually modest.

People with very thin faces may need lower energy at deep layers to avoid volume loss, which your dermatologist will consider.

It may suit you if you want to

  • Firm a softening jawline or jowls
  • Tighten under-chin and neck skin
  • Lift the brow and cheek area subtly
  • Maintain results from a previous lifting treatment
  • Avoid injections and visible downtime

Your visit

What happens during treatment

A session is done in clinic with no recovery room needed, so it fits easily into a trip to Seoul.

  1. Assessment Your dermatologist examines laxity, skin thickness and fat distribution and chooses the device, depths and areas.
  2. Preparation Make-up is removed, treatment lines are marked and numbing cream may be applied for comfort.
  3. Treatment Ultrasound gel is applied and energy is delivered line by line at each planned depth, typically over about 30 to 90 minutes.
  4. Aftercare The skin is cleaned and soothed, and we explain what to expect as collagen builds over the next months.

Focused ultrasound as part of a correction plan

This patient had previous filler dissolved with hyaluronidase and then received Shurink focused ultrasound lifting. The change reflects both steps, not ultrasound alone.

Ultrasound results build gradually and vary with skin thickness and laxity. Your dermatologist will discuss what is realistic for you.

Recovery & safety

Recovery, side effects and aftercare

Mild redness, swelling and tenderness to touch are common and usually settle within a few days. Less often, small bruises, temporary tingling or numbness, or raised welts along treatment lines appear. Rare risks include burns and temporary nerve irritation, which careful settings and placement help avoid.

Tell your dermatologist if you are pregnant, have metal implants or devices in the area, an active skin infection or open wound, recent fillers or threads in the treatment zone, or a history of keloids.

Aftercare tips

  • Avoid saunas, hot baths and intense exercise for 1 to 2 days
  • Use gentle skincare and skip strong actives for a few days
  • Apply sunscreen daily
  • Avoid firm facial massage for about a week
  • Give results 2 to 3 months before judging the full effect

Questions we hear every day

Ultrasound Therapy FAQ

Is ultrasound therapy painful?

Many patients feel brief deep heat or a prickling ache, especially over bony areas and at deeper levels. Numbing cream and adjusted energy keep it tolerable for most people. Tell your dermatologist during treatment if any area feels too strong.

When will I see results?

Some firmness may be felt soon after, but the main tightening comes from new collagen and develops over about two to three months. Results vary with age and skin quality, and some people respond more than others.

How long do results last?

Commonly around six to twelve months for the face, depending on the device, settings and your skin. Many patients repeat treatment once or twice a year to maintain the effect as natural ageing continues.

Can I fly right after treatment?

Yes. There is usually no downtime, so ultrasound therapy suits international patients on short stays. Mild swelling or tenderness may last a few days but does not normally interfere with travel or work.

Is it the same as HIFU or Ultherapy?

Ultrasound skin tightening is the general treatment; HIFU describes the technology, and Ultherapy and Shurink are specific devices that use it. They differ in imaging, cartridges and energy delivery. Your dermatologist chooses the device that best fits your face and goals.
