Blackhead Removal · quick answer
What blackhead removal does, in one paragraph
Blackhead removal clears open comedones, pores clogged with oil and dead skin whose surface darkens when exposed to air. In clinic this means sterile extraction, suction-based cleansing such as Aqua Peel, and salicylic acid (BHA) peels, followed by a routine that slows new blackheads forming. At Ever Skin Clinic in Apgujeong, a board-certified dermatologist checks for acne and oiliness, then suggests a short course and home care, since blackheads tend to return without maintenance.

The treatment
What are blackheads and how are they removed?
Blackheads form when oil and dead skin cells block a hair follicle. Because the pore is open, the plug oxidises and looks dark; it is not dirt. They are common on the nose and chin, especially with oily skin, humidity and heavy products. Squeezing at home or scrubbing hard can inflame the skin and stretch pores.
In clinic we combine gentle extraction with treatments that dissolve oil, such as Aqua Peel or BHA peels. If blackheads come with inflamed spots, an acne treatment plan may be more suitable.
Options we may suggest
- Medical extraction: sterile tools after softening the skin
- Aqua Peel: suction and cleansing solutions to clear pores and hydrate
- BHA (salicylic acid) peel: dissolves oil inside the pore
- Oil-control laser or toning: may help oily skin and pore appearance over a course
- Topical retinoids: prescription home care to reduce new comedones
Is it right for you?
Who is a good candidate?
Blackhead removal suits people with persistent blackheads or whiteheads who want clearer, smoother-looking pores without damaging the skin. It is also helpful before an event or as part of regular care for oily skin.
If you also have red or painful spots, cysts or scarring, a dermatologist will treat the acne itself. For enlarged pores, see pore tightening.
It may suit you if you have
- Visible blackheads on the nose, chin or forehead
- Oily skin or a shiny T-zone
- Clogged pores that return despite cleansing
- Irritation from pore strips or squeezing
- Interest in a simple maintenance routine

Recovery, side effects and aftercare
Mild redness or small marks from extraction usually settle within hours to a day. Peels can cause tightness or light flaking. Over-aggressive extraction can cause bruising or dark marks, which is why it is done gently by trained staff.
Tell your dermatologist if you use isotretinoin or prescription retinoids, have rosacea, eczema, cold sores, an aspirin allergy (relevant to salicylic acid) or are pregnant. Blackheads usually return over weeks, so home care matters as much as the treatment.
Aftercare tips
- Avoid heavy make-up and squeezing for 24 hours
- Use a gentle, non-comedogenic moisturiser
- Apply sunscreen daily, especially after a peel
- Cleanse twice daily and after sweating
- Use prescribed BHA or retinoid products as directed
Questions we hear every day
Blackhead Removal FAQ
Will my blackheads come back?
Usually yes, over weeks to months, because oil production continues. Regular treatment every few weeks and a home routine with salicylic acid or a retinoid can keep them under better control. Your dermatologist will suggest a realistic maintenance plan.
Does blackhead extraction hurt?
It can feel like pressure or a brief pinch, especially on the nose. The skin is softened first to make extraction easier, and we stop if the skin becomes irritated. Discomfort settles quickly afterwards.
Can blackhead removal shrink my pores?
Clearing plugs makes pores look smaller, but it does not change their basic size. For enlarged pores, treatments such as lasers or RF microneedling may help over a course, and your dermatologist can explain the options.
Is it safe for sensitive or darker skin?
Yes, with gentle methods. We choose mild peels and careful extraction to avoid irritation and dark marks. Let us know if your skin reacts easily or tends to darken after spots.
Can I have it before an event or flight?
Yes. Redness usually fades within hours, so a session a day or two before an event is often fine. Avoid strong peels right before important plans if you have not had them before.
